Ahead of Veterans Day, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) reminds veterans statewide of the many services available to help them find a rewarding new career. The Department proudly offers expedited service and priority access to qualified jobs and training opportunities for veterans and eligible spouses. NYSDOL also offers peer support and guidance by employing veterans as Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialists and Local Veterans' Employment Representatives. So far this year, NYSDOL has assisted more than 8,700 veterans with career services.

New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, "Veterans bring unmatched skills and experience to New York's workforce. We're proud to support those who have served our country; helping them turn their service into opportunity and making sure they have a strong pathway to rewarding careers here in New York."

NYSDOL employs veterans at all levels to ensure the Department provides career support that meets the needs of New York's current and former service members. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialists understand the unique challenges of transitioning to civilian employment and offer specialized resources to help veterans overcome employment barriers. Local Veterans' Employment Representatives advocate for veterans with employers and community organizations, helping to create additional opportunities.

The New York State Department of Civil Service's Veterans Temporary Hiring Program is a centralized resource for veterans to connect with temporary job opportunities within the New York State system. The New York State Experience Counts program recognizes military experience toward state licensure requirements. State agencies are also actively identifying ways to leverage the special skills and training possessed by veterans in the workforce.

New York State offers incentives to encourage businesses to hire veterans into the workforce. Through the Hire-A-Vet Credit, eligible businesses may earn up to $5,000 for hiring a qualified veteran or up to $15,000 per hire for hiring a disabled veteran.

Veterans seeking new careers are encouraged to take advantage of NYSDOL's services, including the Virtual Career Center, which connects job seekers to over 250,000 available job opportunities statewide. Additional resources include the New York State Job Bank, Part-Time Hiring Opportunities Job Bank, NY Seasonal Jobs, and a comprehensive calendar of virtual workshops and career fairs. JobZone also provides tools to assist New Yorkers in career planning, resume building, and job search organization.
