The state has dismissed its May 2025 inquiry into our district's alleged violation of the prohibited concepts law. This resolution does not involve any admission of wrongdoing on the district's part, and the state's actions indicate the legal investigation is no longer worth pursuing. We have always maintained full compliance with the law and this matter was well-positioned for conclusion.
"Austin ISD has maintained since the beginning that we have not violated this law and that our district policy is in compliance, specifically concerning the teaching of 'Critical Race Theory' in our schools," said Superintendent Matias Segura.
In February 2022, district leaders were given resources and directed to educate campus staff on the contents of the law.
"This lawsuit consumed valuable time and public funds. This resolution allows us to focus our resources on our core mission: providing a high-quality public school education for every student in our district," said Board President Lynn Boswell. "Austin ISD deeply values its teachers and staff as professionals. We trust each of them to follow state law and district policies while creating joyful learning environments, supporting every child as an individual and expanding opportunities for our students."
As we've done in the past, the district will issue communication to all principals and staff, reminding them of the requirements of the Texas Education Code. This will include directing all compliance inquiries to the superintendent's designated administrator.
Austin ISD remains committed to upholding state law and district policy while supporting our educators in their daily work. We are deeply committed to our Austin community and uphold high standards and values for our students and educators. We are grateful to have this matter resolved so that we can continue to focus on what matters most: our students' education.
