Inside Safehas addressed 120 encampments across all 15 Council Districts
LOS ANGELES - In the last week, Mayor Bass' Inside SafeField Intervention Team housed nearly 70 Angelenos living in long-standing encampments, cleared 10 RVs, and removed more than 18 tons of debris through two coordinated operations in South Los Angeles and Lincoln Heights. "The work of Inside Safewill always be focused on the needs of communities across Los Angeles, ensuring every Angeleno is treated with dignity and respect while receiving the services they need on the path to stability," said Mayor Bass. "In every council district across Los Angeles, Inside Safehas proven to be an important component of our comprehensive strategy that has led to a two-year decrease in homelessness for the first time in City history - and this urgent work will continue."
"After years of outreach, our unhoused neighbors will have access to services and shelter while our housed residents and businesses will be able to access public spaces safely," said Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson. "This Inside Safeoperation at the Western Industrial Complex demonstrates the importance of partnerships between local and state governments and centering community-led outreach."
"By coordinating closely with the Mayor's office, seventeen people in Lincoln Heights and Pico Union moved into interim housing during these latest operations," said Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez."My office has been on the ground, engaging people at encampments for years, and we will continue to meet our unhoused neighbors exactly where they are to help them access the specific resources that they need."
In Lincoln Heights, residents and local business owners raised serious public safety concerns regarding a long-standing encampment on Pasadena Avenue and Avenue 24 that frequently diverted resources from the LAPD and the LAFD. Through close collaboration with Council District 1, Inside Safesuccessfully resolved the encampment, providing life-saving interim housing with services to each encampment resident and returning street access to local businesses and a neighborhood grocery store.
In South L.A., Mayor Bass held two community meetings with residents at the Western Industrial Complex to listen to public safety concerns regarding the previous encampment at Gage Avenue and St. Andrews Place. The Inside Safeteam worked with the Council Office, City departments, and service providers to develop a comprehensive plan to address the encampment, voluntarily place individuals into housing, and enhance safety and cleanliness in the surrounding area.
"I want to express my sincere appreciation for Mayor Bass and her team for their commitment through the Inside Safeoperation and the focused effort to clean up the Western Industrial Corridor while providing meaningful housing solutions for our unhoused neighbors," said Tiffany L. Hinton, Founder & CEO The Connect. "It is encouraging to see leadership that listens, follows through, and takes action."
"We believe every member of our community deserves dignity, opportunity, and a safeplace to call home," said Shawn Davis, CEO, Ofmp, Inc."Community improvement efforts must include compassionate outreach and real housing solutions for our unhoused families, not just cleanup efforts. Our community matters and that includes our unhoused neighbors. OFMP, Inc. remains committed to working with local leaders, service providers, and residents to create cleaner, safer neighborhoods while ensuring that no family is left behind in the process."
Building on Los Angeles' first two-year decline in street homelessness, Mayor Bass will continue addressing the decades-long humanitarian crisis on our streets by bringing partners together and fixing the broken bureaucracy that led individuals to homelessness in the first place.
