Chip & Snip program gets off to a strong start

The inaugural Chip & Snip Community Pet Clinic launched over the weekend in Fort Worth, providing free spay and neuter surgeries, microchips and vaccinations to nearly a dozen pets in a single afternoon.

The new program brings essential veterinary services directly into neighborhoods with the greatest need, helping remove barriers to care.

Fort Worth resident Catherine Santos first learned about the program after taking her dogs to a Fort Worth Animal Care & Control (FWACC)-sponsored vaccination clinic in the city's east side. After hearing about the benefits of Chip & Snip, she registered both of her dogs online and was later contacted to schedule an appointment.

"Both of my dogs are about eight months old, and this program is very cost effective," said Santos. "I used to live in Houston and the city had a similar problem [with overpopulation], so I was excited to see Fort Worth roll out this program."

Santos said a family friend recently had a litter of puppies and struggled to find homes for them. When the family reached out for help, she welcomed one of the puppies into her home. Now, she wants to give both her pets the healthiest start possible and believes spay and neuter surgery is an important first step.

Santos said she has already shared information about the Chip & Snip Community Pet Clinic with friends and family. She hopes more pet owners will take advantage of the program to help reduce pet overpopulation and ease the burden on local shelters.

The Chip & Snip Community Pet Clinic is part of FWACC's ongoing commitment to reducing pet overpopulation and increasing access to affordable veterinary care.

By bringing services directly into neighborhoods, the program helps prevent unwanted litters, reduce shelter intake and keep more pets with the families who love them.

As staffing and capacity allow, the City plans to host one clinic each month. The next Chip & Snip Community Pet Clinic is scheduled for August and will take place in a southwest Fort Worth neighborhood.
