October 30 Fall Poetry Workshop Next Week!

Join Olympia Poet Laureate Kathleen Byrd for fall poetry reading on the theme of eco-poetry. Workshop is free, registration required:
  • October 30, 2024, 4-5:30pm Poetry reading session at Harbor House on Percival Landing. The selected book is You are Here: Poetry of the Natural World, edited by Ada Limon. Bring a copy of the book if you can (you don't need to read the entire collection, but should have some familiarity with it). Kathleen will bring additional poems or readings to further our conversation.
Olympia Seeks to Fill Vacancies on the Arts and Heritage Commissions and the Cultural Access Board
The City of Olympia is seeking community members interested in serving on City's Arts Commission, Heritage Commission and Cultural Access Program Advisory Board. Advisory bodies provide a structured way for residents to share opinions and perspectives, study issues, develop recommendations, and provide advice from the community perspective to the Olympia City Council.

The application period is open and runs until Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at 4 p.m. Membership terms on the three bodies run for three years, with appointments beginning on April 1 and terms ending March 31. Join us at Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation for some great classes!

Washington Center opens nominations for 2025 Excellence in the Arts Awards

The Washington Center for the Performing Arts is delighted to announce that nominations for the Excellence in Arts Awards are now open. According to Jill Barnes, Executive Director, "Each year at our annual gala we recognize those who help build a vibrant cultural community through the Excellence in the Arts Awards."

The awards include two categories. The Achievement in the Arts category recognizes outstanding artistry (performing arts or visual arts) by an individual or organization in the greater South Sound. The Commitment to the Arts category recognizes an individual or organization for their leadership, support or advocacy for the arts in the greater South Sound.

Individual nominees for Excellence in the Arts awards must be at least 18 years old and have a history of at least 12 months of work in the arts in Pierce, Thurston, Mason, and/or Lewis Counties. Organizations must be located in Pierce, Thurston, Mason, and/or Lewis counties, and have been in operation for at least 12 months.

Nominations will be open until 11:59pm PST on November 14 and can be submitted online. Awardees will be announced in December and recognized at the CENTER Stage Awards & Gala on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

This project is an effort to collect memories and images of life in Olympia, Washington during an era of significant social change from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Olympia Music History Project Presentation
The Olympia Music History Project, in collaboration with the Olympia Timberland Library, presents a special evening exploring Olympia's emergence as a vibrant hub for musicians and cultural tastemakers.

Join John Foster, Toni Holm, Danny Kelly, Dave Rauh, and Dana Squires as they share personal stories from the early days of The Evergreen State College and Olympia's independent music scene. The evening will begin and conclude with a curated selection of Olympia's musical recordings, DJed by James Maeda.

Olympia Symphony Orchestra Announces the Departure of Jennifer Hermann as Executive Director
Hermann leaves a legacy of strong administration, expanded programs, and deep community relationships

After eight years serving the Olympia Symphony Orchestra (OSO), Jennifer Hermann has announced her departure from the Executive Director position. She will remain in the community, joining the Washington Center for the Performing Arts in the role of Director of Education & Community Engagement. The board has hired local arts professional Thom Mayes to join the OSO as Executive Director. Mayes and Hermann will work closely together until her departure in November.

Save the Date: 2024 Holiday Historic Home Tour
The Olympia Historical Society & Bigelow House Museum is proud to announce that the 2024 Holiday Historic Home Tour will happen on Sunday, December 8 from Noon to 4:00. This year's tour will feature five historic homes in the South Capitol Neighborhood Historic District plus an Open House at the Bigelow House Museum.

Pre-sale of tickets will be available in mid-November at Childhood's End Gallery, Drees, and Thompson's Furniture. Tickets will also be sold on the day of the event at the Coach House at 211 21st Avenue SW and at the Bigelow House Museum at 918 Glass Avenue NE.
