Introducing a New Role at The Times: Editor, Video Training

I'm delighted to announce that Tom Denison has joined The Times as editor, video training, based in New York.

In this newly created role, Tom will work closely with Solana Pyne and other leaders in Video, desk leadership, NDS and me to build and deepen video skills across the newsroom. He will build on the coaching already offered by Video to help reporters and editors to identify and implement video reporting as an extension of their journalism. With this dedicated resource, we'll make our training more systematic and even better aligned with video strategy, desk priorities and the newsroom's evolving needs.

Tom is a producer and director with deep experience leading high-impact, award-winning video journalism for major news organizations. His work includes Emmy- and duPont-winning projects spanning digital video, feature documentaries and newsmagazine segments.

Tom has helped journalists translate deeply reported news stories into compelling visual narratives for Axios on HBO, CNN+, PBS "Frontline" and other outlets across a broad range of topics, including international, business, politics and tech. He has extensive on-camera coaching experience including building new skills with reporters remotely during the pandemic - expertise that will especially benefit colleagues outside our hubs. He has helped reporters develop video interview techniques, and managed field and postproduction teams on tight deadlines.

As Jonathan Swan, who worked with Tom at Axios, says, "He's the kind of colleague who quietly raises the level of the work around him."

As we map out plans for newsroom training, Tom will embed with Video and meet with department heads to understand our report and workflows across the formats and platforms where we share our reporting. Tom's initial focus will be on spotting video opportunities, developing on-camera presence, and basic phone shooting. This work will be grounded in clear, practical workflows and will ensure that training aligns with our production capacity. We've seen that the most effective video training happens in small groups and one-on-one; that is where Tom's combination of craft expertise and collaborative temperament will be most powerful.

Please join me in welcoming Tom to The Times.
