Pennsylvania American Water Announces $8.6 Million in Water Line Upgrades for South Hills Communities

Nearly four miles of water main to be replaced

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2025) - Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of $8.6 million in improvement projects this fall that will replace nearly four miles of water main in Dormont Borough, Mt. Lebanon Municipality, Mt. Oliver Borough and the Beltzhoover (18th Ward), St. Clair and Arlington neighborhoods (16th Ward) of the City of Pittsburgh. These projects include two previously announced projects in Mt. Lebanon that will begin soon. These main replacements will improve reliability and water quality for customers and increase water flow for household use and firefighting.

"We're continuously evaluating our system, prioritizing projects and making infrastructure investments that enable us to deliver the high quality, reliable water service our customers deserve," said Eric Beringer, project manager for Pennsylvania American Water. "By replacing aging infrastructure in the South Hills of Allegheny County, we're delivering on our commitment to keep life flowing for customers now and into the future."

Contractors will be working in the following areas to replace old water mains, some installed as long ago as the 1930s, with new ductile iron pipes as part of the system investment:

Dormont Borough

  • Crosby Avenue (from Beverly Place to 2670 Crosby Ave.)
  • Beverly Place (from Philadelphia Avenue to Crosby Avenue)

Mt. Lebanon Municipality

  • Vermont and Roycroft avenues (from 100 Roycroft Avenue to 145 Hoodridge Dr.)
  • Richland Road and Lindenwood Avenue (from Catalpa Place to 243 Lindenwood Ave.)
  • Lakemont and Kurt drives (from Greenhurst Drive to Lindendale Drive)

Mt. Oliver Borough

  • Sherman Street (from Brownsville Road to Moye Place)
  • Koehler Street (from Arlington Avenue to Walnut Lane)

City of Pittsburgh

  • Climax Street (from Beltzhoover Avenue to Blanco Way)
  • Freeland Street and Loyal, Bernd and Ardale ways (from Beltzhoover Avenue to Gearing Avenue)
  • Gearing Avenue (from Freeland Street to Chalfont Street)
  • Sylvania Avenue (from Gearing Avenue to Montooth Street)
  • Montooth Street, Nina Way, and Delmont Avenue (from Industry Street to Montooth Street)
  • Bassler Street (from Devlin Street to the end of the street)
  • Schuler Street (from Mountain Avenue to Bebel Street)
  • Bebel and Kohne streets (from Shuler Street to Fisher Street)

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The first projects will start in mid-September and, weather permitting, will be completed by the end of the year. Final restoration is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
