America Celebrates 250 Years

The National Capital Planning Commission joins the nation in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As our nation's capital, Washington, DC is how America holds itself out to the world. The city was conceived for this very purpose, and its history has been shaped by visionary plans, of which NCPC is now the proud steward. America's 250th birthday offers an opportunity to celebrate our capital's tremendous legacy and shining future.

It has been my distinct honor to serve as NCPC Chairman, and I believe it is fitting to use this remarkable milestone to reflect on the role that NCPC has played in our country's history. For over a century, NCPC has served as the federal government's planning agency. For half a century, it previously also served as the city's local planning agency. Throughout this history, NCPC has carefully and diligently guided the design of our nation's capital to reflect our country's ideals, while also meeting the needs of people who live, work, and visit here.

Planning requires an appreciation of the past and a vision for the future. NCPC is proud of its vital responsibility to preserve and enhance the National Capital Region's extraordinary resources for the next 250 years.

Join the festivities this summer! Partake in signature events on the National Mall, including the Great American State Fair and July 4th fireworks, as well as parades, block parties, and other celebrations throughout the city. Stay up to date by visiting Freedom 250, America 250, and DC 250.
