Albany County Legislature Mourns Passing of Former Chair, Legislator Charles E. "Charley" Houghtaling, Jr.

The Albany County Legislature was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Chair of the Legislature and Legislator Charles E. "Charley" Houghtaling, Jr., last week.

A lifetime Albany County resident, spending over 70 years in Feura Bush, he was a lifetime member of the Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Department.

While he owned and operated Houghtaling's Market for decades, he served on the Albany County Soil and Water Board for 25 years and the Albany County Legislature for 27 years. He chaired the Albany County Legislature for 16 years. He was also one of the original members of the Steering Committee for the updating and expansion of the Albany County International Airport.

Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham said: "Charley Houghtaling was an Albany County institution. He navigated challenges and triumphs with class, elegance, and fairness. We are following his inspiration now and in his debt for his years of leadership forever."

Albany County Legislature Deputy Chairwoman Wanda Willingham said: "After working with Charley Houghtaling for many years, I am so proud that he chose to dedicate and commit so much of his life to public service. After losing Mr. Bill Clay just months ago, we are so saddened to lose two incredible legislative leaders in such a short time, but we are thankful for everything they gave back to all of us in Albany County."

Albany County Legislature Democratic Majority Leader Dennis Feeney said: "Charles 'Charley' Houghtaling's tenure as Chairman helped define the Albany County Legislature. He led with integrity, collaboration, and a lasting commitment to public service that continues to influence the work of the Democratic Majority today."
