"Giving back to my workplace is heart-warming," said Valerie D. Wheeler, a benefits specialist in Human Resources. "Just knowing that whatever I give will be appreciated and applied to a meaningful need makes me feel not only fortunate but grateful to be part of a dynamic place where everyone can play a part in its success and progress."
That spirit is at the heart of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's fourth annual Family Campaign, running September 1-30, 2025. More than just a fundraiser, the campaign underscores the shared vision the university community: Healthy Tennesseans. Thriving Communities.
Faculty, staff, residents, and students across all campuses-in Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville-are encouraged to participate. Gifts of any size may be directed to a college, department, program, scholarship, or existing fund. Plus, any donations made since July 1, 2025, count toward this year's totals. Contributions can be made through payroll deduction, credit card, Apple Pay, Google Wallet or PayPal.
Last year, 765 donors exceeded the campaign's goal of 700 participants. This year, the target is 800 donors. "The Family Campaign is about showing that we stand behind the mission we live every day," said Vice Chancellor for Advancement Brigitte Grant. "Participation at every level builds a culture of philanthropy that strengthens our impact-supporting research, advancing care and shaping healthier communities."
Wheeler, who has been with UT Health Science Center for 16 years, was formerly in Information Technology Services, where she served as a Family Campaign Captain. She has also been a UT Promise Mentor.
"Gifts to the Family Campaign not only benefit our campuses but go out into the wider communities we serve," she said.
Donors contributing $10 or more between July 1 and September 30 will receive a packable, branded tote bag, while those giving $5 a month or more through payroll deduction will receive a set of branded stone coasters.
To celebrate the campaign, the Memphis campus will host an event on September 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Quadrangle featuring carnival food and activities. Additional gatherings will be held for the Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville campus communities.
"When we give together, we show our alumni and community partners that our commitment to our mission is real," Grant said. "By joining together, we multiply what any of us could accomplish on our own."
Wheeler views giving as an expression of her belief in service. "I believe we were placed here on earth to make a difference and to help wherever and whenever we can," she said. "All it takes is a willing heart, time and effort-and the rest will take care of itself.
"When we stop giving, we stop living."
