SR 316 Bundle 1 Project Newsletter October 2026

S1

Construction continues along the State Route (SR) 316 corridor on Bundle 1, including SR 316 at Bethlehem Road and Barber Creek Road, with crews advancing interchange improvements, paving, lighting, and other roadway features throughout the project area.

At the Bethlehem Road interchange, crews continue building new ramps and roadway connections. Utility relocation is nearing completion, with remaining telecommunications adjustments underway to accommodate the new interchange.

At the Barber Creek Road interchange, crews are finalizing work on the new lighting system, installing guardrail and pedestrian sidewalks, and paving asphalt shoulders along the interchange ramps and nearby sections of SR 316. Reminder Barber Creek Road remains closed at this time.

Along SR 316 westbound, concrete paving continues on the mainline and will continue over the next several weeks as roadway improvements advance throughout the corridor.

Erosion control and maintenance activities continue throughout the corridor. Crews are maintaining silt fencing, construction exits, orange barrier fencing, and temporary mulch to protect nearby waterways and keep work areas orderly and safe. Traffic control measures remain in place to guide drivers safely through active work zones.

S2

As work moves continues this fall, drivers can expect the Bethlehem Road and Barber Creek Road interchanges to take shape, along with ongoing concrete paving along SR 316.

At Bethlehem Road, crews will continue advancing the new ramps and roadway connections. At Barber Creek Road, upcoming work includes additional guardrail and pedestrian sidewalk installation, asphalt shoulder paving, and remaining lighting improvements.

Drivers should continue to watch for temporary barriers, construction vehicles, and changing conditions as crews continue working throughout the corridor.

S3

October is "Careers in Construction Month," a great time to recognize the many skilled professionals helping bring the SR 316 improvements to life. From equipment operators and construction crews to inspectors and engineers, each person has an important role to keep construction moving safely and efficiently.

Who's Working Along SR 316?

  • Construction Crews build the roadway, bridges, drainage systems, and other improvements drivers see taking shape.

  • Equipment Operators safely operate the heavy machinery needed for grading, paving, and other construction activities.

  • Inspectors monitor construction activities and materials to help ensure the work meets project requirements.

  • Engineers provide technical support and help address challenges that arise as construction progresses.

When traveling through the SR 316 work zones, remember that each hard hat represents someone working to improve the corridor for the community.

The SR 316 Bundle 1 work zones at SR 316/Barber Creek and SR 211/Bethlehem Road are one of six Georgia work zones participating in a Georgia DOT-sponsored research study led by the University of Georgia. The project is examining work zone conditions and safety strategies to identify opportunities to create safer environments for construction crews and the traveling public.

Findings from the study will help inform the development of a Work Zone Safety Guide designed to support Georgia DOT and its partners in enhancing safety practices across Georgia. Please stay alert, use caution, and help keep everyone safe when traveling through work zones.

Data collection conducted by Yiping Li, Research Student, and Dr. Stephan A. Durham - Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, University of Georgia College of Civil Engineering.
