A Day of Learning at Seedleaf's Head Water Farm
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently attended a field day at Seedleaf's Headwater Farm in Lexington, KY, a significant event organized by The Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK). The gathering attracted 50 attendees who came to learn about organic farming practices and the various supports available for their farming operations.
During the event, Seedleaf showcased its organic operation, providing insights into its farming methods, its diverse crops, and the importance of sustainable practices. Attendees were given a farm tour to see firsthand the challenges and rewards of organic farming.
A key highlight of the day was the discussion surrounding NRCS programs, particularly the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). After being awarded an EQIP contract, Seedleaf worked with Grow Appalachia to implement a 15-foot-wide by 40-foot-long high tunnel structure on their property. This high tunnel has been instrumental in extending their growing season, allowing them to grow various crops year-round.
The field day also included opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing among attendees. Participants were encouraged to discuss organic farming techniques, pest management strategies, and soil health improvements. The day emphasized the importance of community in agriculture, as local farmers and agricultural enthusiasts came together to foster a supportive environment focused on innovation and sustainability.
Overall, the event educated participants about effective organic practices and highlighted the collaborative efforts of organizations like NRCS, OAK, and Grow Appalachia to promote a greener and more sustainable agricultural landscape in Kentucky.
