ASM Designates MSU a "Milestones in Microbiology" Site

October 22, 2026

Washington, DC - ASM is honored to name Michigan State University (MSU) a "Milestones in Microbiology" site. This designation recognizes MSU and the Department of Microbiology, Genetics and Immunology's lasting contributions to microbial ecology, microbial systematics and evolutionary biology.

During a reception following the MGI Whittam Symposium on Oct. 22, ASM will officially recognize MSU and the Department of Microbiology, Genetics and Immunology and their historic leaders and accomplishments.

"For more than a century, MSU scientists have advanced our understanding of microbial ecology and evolution, as well as the broader field of microbiology," said Vaughn Cooper, Ph.D., ASM President. "ASM is proud to designate MSU as a Milestones in Microbiology site, a program that recognizes sites where landmark developments have shaped the history of microbiology."

From the foundational work of the Center for Microbial Ecology-a pioneering NSF Science and Technology Center-to the globally influential BEACON Center and Lenski Long-Term Evolution Experiment, MSU microbial scientists have consistently advanced our understanding of microbial communities and evolutionary processes. These initiatives have not only produced groundbreaking discoveries but have cultivated a legacy of interdisciplinary collaboration, technological innovation and scientific leadership that continues to shape the field.

Established by ASM, the Milestones in Microbiology program promotes public understanding of microbiology by honoring sites of major scientific breakthroughs. With this designation, MSU joins a distinguished list of more than 20 other institutions whose discoveries have profoundly shaped medicine, science and society.
