Washburn University taps a leader for the Mulvane Art Museum

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University is pleased to announce that Dr. Sara Stepp, interim director of the Mulvane Art Museum, will assume the role permanently.

"Even in her time as interim director, Sara has been extraordinary," said Dr. Kelly Erby, dean, Washburn University College of Arts & Sciences. "She has already strengthened the Mulvane Art Museum's ties to both the campus and the broader community, bringing fresh energy, vision and collaboration. I am excited to see her continue this work with even greater impact as director."

Stepp joined the Mulvane staff in 2022 as academic curator and has more than eight years of experience working in museums and exhibition spaces. She earned a doctorate in art history with honors from the University of Kansas in 2023 and has taught university-level courses in art history and museum studies for more than six years.

Among Stepp's honors are an Andrew W. Mellon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Curriculum Fellowship and the Chu-Tsing Li Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Kansas. Her work is driven by a passion for artistic inquiry, object-based learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.

"The Mulvane Art Museum is an important cultural and academic resource for Washburn and our region. We're proud to offer meaningful, accessible art experiences through exhibitions, events, educational programs and artmaking activities," said Stepp. "Going forward, my priority is to deepen our connection with the community, fostering a strong bond that leads to more opportunities for learning and creativity through the visual arts."

Stepp took the role on an interim basis in March following the retirement of Connie Gibbons, who had served as director of the Mulvane for nearly 12 years.
