UNHCR commends U.S. decision on refugee resettlement

The following statement is attributable to Mr. Matthew Reynolds, UNHCR Representative to the United States and the Caribbean

Washington, DC - UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, applauds the United States for its decision to admit up to 125,000 refugees for resettlement during the fiscal year starting October 1, 2024.

This commitment provides a lifeline to refugees, allowing them to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity after being forcibly uprooted from home. It reaffirms the longstanding solidarity that the U.S. government and the American people have shown toward those in need of life-saving protection.

With this decision, the U.S. sets a powerful example of how humanitarian principles can be translated into effective resettlement policy. UNHCR calls on more countries to follow the lead of the United States by increasing resettlement opportunities and legal pathways for refugees.

UNHCR is ready to collaborate with the U.S. government to ensure the resettlement program's successful implementation in the year ahead.
