Large Fire Damages Three Homes on S Geddes St

Firefighters Battle Extensive Fire on Geddes Street:

Syracuse, NY- On October 12, 2024 at 8:02 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 1114 South Geddes St. Firefighters from Station 3, on Bellevue Ave, arrived at the scene two minutes later and found a two-and-a-half-story wood frame residence with fire throughout the attic. Flames were starting to spread to the house next door at 1112. A signal '99', indicating a working fire, was transmitted.

There was a previous fire at 1114 South Geddes Street that left the structure weakened. Due to the volume of fire present and the already weakened structure of the vacant home, the Incident Commander called for an exterior operation. As teams of firefighters set up multiple hose lines to keep the fire from spreading further other teams of firefighters entered 1112 S Geddes St to search and extinguish any fire that had spread to that building. Hose lines were stretched to the attic to extinguish fire located inside 1112 S Geddes St. Searches of 1112 S Geddes confirmed all occupants were able to evacuate the structure safely. 1116 S Geddes St also sustained some damage due to the heat of the fire in 1114. It was confirmed that no fire was burning in that structure. It took water flowing from the aerial master streams of Engine 3, Engine 5, and Truck 3 to bring the fire in 1114 S Geddes St under control. The fire was declared out after approximately ninety minutes. Crews were on the scene for three hours to extinguish the extensive fire, clean up, and assist the fire investigators.

The original fire building was a vacant residence and the fire occurred in the attic. That structure is a total loss and will be torn down. 1116 was damaged by the radiant heat of the fire. 1112 which had fire spread to the inside suffered, fire, water, and smoke damage. At least five occupants were displaced by this fire; they are being assisted by the Red Cross. The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is still ongoing. There were no injuries to civilians or Fire Department personnel>.

A total of 48 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
