Traffic Impact: Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Traffic Impact: Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Published on November 07, 2025

Construction is set to begin on the Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project over the Brazos River. Site preparation work will start the week of November 10 followed by work on the pedestrian walkway and minor bridge work the week of November 17. Major construction is expected to start after Thanksgiving. The project is anticipated to be complete in early fall 2026.

The project includes bridge rail and pedestrian walkway improvements, bridge joint replacements, vegetation removal, minor concrete repairs, a polymer concrete overlay on the Herring Avenue Bridge over the Brazos River, and replacement of outdated or damaged guardrail.

Bridges require periodic maintenance and repair to mitigate degradation and extend their useful life. The City of Waco has identified repairs that are still manageable from a cost standpoint, so we are completing them now before they worsen and become more expensive.

Traffic & Pedestrian Impacts

  • Pedestrian Walkway Closure: Work on the pedestrian walkway will begin early on Monday, November 17. Minor lane closures are expected, but traffic will still be able to flow in both directions.
  • Lane Closures: Major construction will begin after Thanksgiving, and periodic lane closures are expected. At least one lane will remain open to traffic for most of the project duration.
  • Full Closures: In late spring 2026, full lane closures will be required in stages to complete the polymer overlay and joint replacement work. Northbound and southbound lanes will be closed separately at different times, ensuring one direction of travel remains open while work is completed on the other. The bridge will not be completely closed to all traffic at any time.

Thank You for Your Cooperation

Please adhere to all posted signage near the bridge, which will be placed in advance to warn of upcoming work. Message boards will also be posted ahead of any half-bridge closure to notify drivers and direct traffic to established detours.

We urge all residents to drive carefully through the construction zones. We sincerely thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the Herring Avenue Bridge.
