George Washington University was named a top-performing institution for this year's nationally recognized Boren Awards. Sponsored by the federal government, the Boren Awards funds undergraduates through the Boren Scholarship and graduate students through the Boren Fellowship to study language abroad in destinations deemed critical to US national security interests.
GW was named a top-performing institution in categories for producing the highest number of Boren Scholars and Boren Fellows, and it tied first in the nation as the top-performing non-language flagship institution. Through these awards, 15 GW students from the Columbia College of Arts and Sciences, the Elliott School of International Affairs, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration will be studying Arabic in Morocco, Mandarin in Taiwan, Persian in Tajikistan, Swahili in Tanzania and Russian throughout Latvia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, and Armenia. Upon the completion of their overseas programs, students will commit to a year of federal service after graduation and embark in public service careers centered on national defense.
Applications for the 2026-2027 Boren Awards are open now through January 2027. Currently enrolled students who would like to prepare a competitive application are encouraged to schedule a meeting with Kevin Walden in GW's Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research or Isabelle Giuttari in the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships to learn more and participate in the annual campus endorsement process. The campus due date for applications is December 1.
