Sutter Hospitals Earn Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Top Honors

NORTHERN CALIF. - Sutter Health's legacy of delivering award-winning, clinically excellent care continues to shine, as Healthgrades unveiled its 2026 Specialty Excellence Awards - with Orthopedic and Joint Care leading the way.

Among the accolades:

  • 120 five-star ratings for clinical performance across a range of specialties.
  • Three hospitals - Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Sutter's Novato Community Hospital, and Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital - named America's 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Care.
  • Three hospitals - Sutter's Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, and Sutter's Novato Community Hospital - named America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement.

Each year, Healthgrades evaluates risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top hospitals in key specialty areas. Through easy-to-understand, objective measures of hospital performance, Healthgrades empowers patients with the information they need to find a hospital that excels in their procedure or condition.

"Delivering high quality, safe and innovative care is our hallmark and the foundation of all we do," said Dr. Bill Isenberg, chief medical and quality officer, Sutter Health. "We consistently deliver top-tier care, designed to meet each patient's unique needs. Our goal is to maximize patients' health, well-being and quality of life."

Focus on Expanding Access

As a community-based, integrated health system, Sutter is committed to expanding access to distinct specialty services close to home. Sutter seeks to train and retain more physicians, plus rapidly translate and use clinical research findings to continually inform and elevate care across the communities it serves.

Over the next decade, Sutter Health will make huge strides in addressing healthcare access challenges for its patients and closing care gaps where they exist. Sutter is:

  • Rapidly expanding capacity, opening dozens of new care centers, and exploring innovative ways to help its patients get and stay well. By the end of 2025, the organization will have added more than 160 hospital beds, and between now and 2027, will open 27 new ambulatory care centers.
  • Growing and better connecting advanced services like cancer, heart & vascular, orthopedics & sports medicine and neuroscience. New efforts will also focus on urgent care, diagnostic imaging, behavioral health, advanced organ therapies, women's health and pediatrics. Patients will seamlessly experience accessible, highly coordinated specialty care close to home - every time.

"We want every patient at Sutter to receive the same level of exceptional care, regardless of where they access treatment," said Keegan Kirby, a registered nurse and vice president of Sutter's Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Service Line. "To realize our mission that puts patients first, our clinical service lines support physicians and care teams with tools that support consistently delivered, elite care."
