German Parliament hosts discussions on the future of the European human rights system

Last month, the German Parliament, the Bundestag, hosted public events where the importance of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Council of Europe was discussed within the framework of the Conventions 75th anniversary.

A conference on 26 March 2026, entitled "75 Jahre Europäische Menschenrechtskonvention: ein europäischer Triumph in Gefahr", brought together some 150 participants from politics, academia, NGOs and associations, along with around 40 students, to examine current challenges and criticisms facing the European human rights system, with a view to identifying and proposing practical solutions. The event was organised by the German delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Watch the video of the conference

On 19 March 2026, the European Movement Germany (Europäische Bewegung Deutschland EBD) organised an event in the German Parliament focusing on the discussions in several Council of Europe member states about reassessing individual protection standards, particularly in migration and internal security. The European Movement Germany (EBD) warned against a political shift in interpreting the European Convention on Human Rights. The event, organised to mark the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, touched on fundamental questions regarding the authority of the European Court of Human Rights and the reliability of Europe's human rights protection system. In addition, on 4 March 2026, as part of the European Movement Germany (EBD) Council of Europe project, a briefing was organised in Berlin at the Europäisches Haus, focusing on the European future of the Republic of Moldova and the role of the Council of Europe in the EU enlargement process. The event addressed the status of Moldova's EU accession process against the backdrop of the 2025 parliamentary elections and the work of the new government. The roadmap ahead and key reforms to implement the Copenhagen Criteria, particularly in the areas of the rule of law, the judiciary, the fight against corruption, and public administration were also discussed. The interfaces between the Council of Europe and EU enlargement policy were examined in light of the Action Plan 2025-2028 and the priorities of the Moldovan Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers.
