WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) released the following statement after voting against the resolution honoring the life of Charlie Kirk.
"The murder of Charlie Kirk was vile and horrific. This is not the America I know, where people are afraid to voice their political views. While there are many parts of Charlie's life that should be celebrated, he also demonized minorities and insulted Black women and men. His rhetoric was hateful, and I do not believe we should celebrate that kind of language.
"The healing that this country needs must be rooted in principles of Godly love and peace. Civility and respect for all people must be paramount. This political culture of reality TV drama and public fights can only end if we all choose to reject it.
"Unfortunately, this resolution did not reflect those values.
"Instead, I am proud to cosponsor a bipartisan resolution that condemns all forms of political violence and calls for a rejection of rhetoric that dehumanizes people."
