A-State Adds Solar Scooter Charging Stations to Provide Safe, Easy Access

JONESBORO - Students across campus at Arkansas State University have different methods of getting to classes. Some walk, others use a bicycle, and some use a scooter. Unlike the first two options, scooters require charging. To make that easier and safer for students, the university team has added 10 new solar chargers to campus this week.

"The university recognized a large uptick in the use of electric scooters on campus," said Melissa Dooley, director of the Department of Environmental, Health and Safety. "With that also came an uptick in referrals to student conduct when these devices were found in residential spaces to be charged."

Dooley said A-State prohibits charging or storing electric scooters inside.

"Because of their propensity to catch fire, electric scooters are not allowed to be stored or charged inside any university-owned buildings," said Dooley.

Dooley said charging stations can be found across campus in areas of heavy student use. The solar chargers can charge up to eight devices at a time.

"Students can position their scooters between the racks and use their own chain or locking mechanism to secure the device while it charges. This setup helps prevent theft or tampering and adds an extra layer of protection while the scooter is unattended," Dooley added.

A registration form is available so that those on campus can register their electric transportation devices. While not required, Dooley said this process can make it easier for students if they encounter any problems in the future.

"We encourage students to complete it. There is no fee attached to registration or the charging stations. There are a few reasons you should consider registering your scooter or electric transportation device, not including electric wheelchairs or other ADA devices."

Registering these devices can help with the identification of the electric transportation unit in the event of an accident, if it is lost or abandoned, or in emergencies.

"By providing outdoor solar-powered stations, the university reduces risks and helps keep students and facilities safe," Dooley concluded.
