President Claudia Sheinbaum announced today that the Mexican Government will exhaust every legal and diplomatic avenue to bring attention to conditions at some detention centers in the United States, and reaffirms its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Mexican nationals abroad.
The Foreign Ministry is pursuing every available consular measure following the recent death of a Mexican national in U.S. immigration custody at the Adelanto Detention Center in California on March 25, the third such death at that facility.
A press conference will be held this afternoon at the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles, led by Vanessa Calva Ruiz, the Foreign Ministry's Director General for Consular Protection and Strategic Planning, together with regional consuls and attorneys representing the families of those who died at the Adelanto Detention Center to announce Mexico's participation as amicus curiae in the L.T. Mesrobian lawsuit, filed January 26, 2026.
The lawsuit was filed by Public Counsel of Los Angeles over unsanitary conditions, punitive isolation, and inadequate provision of basic necessities, including medical and mental health care, outdoor access, adequate nutrition and water, and adequate living conditions.
During their visit to Los Angeles, Mexican consular officials will meet with the families of those who have died at the Adelanto Center, as well as with organizations working to protect the human rights of immigrants.
The Mexican Embassy in the United States will also send letters to federal legislators regarding the inadequate medical care at the Adelanto Center.
Roberto Velasco Álvarez, the Foreign Ministry's Undersecretary for North America, raised the issue with U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald D. Johnson. The Foreign Ministry will also contact California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who recently filed an amicus curiae brief in the L.T. Mesrobian case, and other California officials.
Mexico will also submit a request for a thematic hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on deaths in ICE detention centers.
The Foreign Ministry again calls on the authorities responsible to put an end to this deplorable situation and urges an immediate review of the Adelanto Detention Center, given the serious failures and clear deficiencies in the medical care provided to those in its custody.
