Wayne State University is kicking off the academic year with Fall Opening - a weeklong, campuswide celebration designed to welcome new and returning Warriors. The festivities begin Monday, Aug. 18, ahead of the start of classes on Monday, Aug. 25.
Fall Opening welcomes the entire Wayne State community - students, their families, faculty and staff - to celebrate the start of a new academic year. The week is packed with events designed to spark connections, build community and set students up for success by showcasing student organizations, support services and academic opportunities.
"We are thrilled to welcome all Warriors and celebrate the exciting opportunities that come with the start of a new academic year," said Dr. Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. "Fall Opening is an important time that helps students build a strong sense of belonging and support, while allowing the entire Wayne State community to come together and celebrate the shared role we play in guiding each student toward success in the classroom, our commitment to making sure Every Warrior Rises."
Rooted in campus traditions, Fall Opening includes longtime, student-focused signature events - Convocation (Aug. 24), FestiFall (Aug. 24) and the Warrior Block Party (Aug. 22). From social mixers to a faculty lunch, faculty and staff are also encouraged to join in the fun throughout the week.
This year's celebration also includes new programming, like the inaugural Warrior Pride 5K Fun Run/Walk (Aug. 22) and a night of soccer and school spirit at Keyworth Stadium as Detroit City Football Club (DCFC) takes on the Tampa Bay Rowdies (Aug. 23). As part of Wayne State's partnership with DCFC, students receive free admission and a complimentary round-trip shuttle from campus to this match.
Fall Opening is made possible through the collective energy of faculty and staff volunteers from across campus. Learn about ways to support Fall Opening here.
"Our community consistently rises to the occasion, especially for our students. Their unwavering commitment brings Fall Opening to life and ensures that every Warrior begins the year feeling supported and inspired" said Dr. Darryl Gardner, vice provost for student success, support, and engagement. "Fall Opening offers our students a strong and intentional start. From the very first day, they'll see that Wayne State is a place where they are valued, and where their potential knows no bounds."
