The Iowa City Senior Center (ICSC) is pleased to announce the release of its May-June 2026 Program Guide, now available to the public. Registration is open for all classes and events, and you can sign up online at icgov.org/senior/registration or by calling 319-356-5220.
This season's programming reflects the Senior Center's mission to enhance the quality of life for older adults by supporting wellness, social connections, community engagement, and lifelong learning. Anyone age 50+ is invited to become an ICSC member, and numerous programs are also open to all ages and do not require membership. All offerings support ICSC's vision to extend social connections and end social isolation for people age 50+.
The May-June 2026 guide features a diverse mix of arts, fitness, technology, intergenerational connections, outdoor recreation, and enrichment programs. Highlights include several special events and new opportunities for community engagement:
Stories Between Generations
Take part in a summer reading and letter exchange program bringing together seniors and young people (third grade-eighth grade) through books. Participants choose from a list of titles exploring identity, justice, belonging, and resilience. A senior and a young person who have selected the same book will be paired as pen pals. Those interested can register between May 1-15, 2026, online.
Celebration of National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the ICSC. This is a day to pay tribute to the trailblazing activists and artists in the queer community whose courage, persistence, passion, and authenticity inspire us today as we continue to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ individuals. The Queer Elders of Iowa City will mark this day with a program of storytelling, poetry, music, and art.
Back to Beaker Street: A Dance Party
From 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Chauncey Swan Park. Step into the sound of a generation and experience the music that changed everything. Join the Beaker Brothers Band for an evening of high-energy, feel-good dancing inspired by the legendary jam bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bring your own lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and snacks for an evening of grooving to the soundtrack of a generation.
