AI is the next great platform shift in commerce. Every day, millions of people turn to AI chats to discover, browse and buy. Agentic commerce is the future and in 2025 we set a vision to build its foundation. Today we're accelerating that vision.
We're announcing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a new open standard co-developed with Google to bring commerce to agents at scale. Native shopping on Google surfaces is rolling out soon, which means Shopify merchants can sell directly in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. We are also releasing an update to our Microsoft Copilot integration with a new embedded checkout experience. These new integrations, in addition to ChatGPT, are managed centrally from the Shopify Admin through Agentic Storefronts.
The Shopify Catalog is now open to every brand through our new Agentic plan, expanding the commerce backbone that connects millions of merchants to buyers worldwide. This means brands on any platform can now use Shopify's infrastructure to sell on AI channels without needing to have a Shopify online store.
Shopify has unmatched insight into how commerce varies and we're investing in standards and tools that enable it to happen everywhere people spend their time.
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)-co-developed by Shopify and Google, and already endorsed by 20+ retailers and platforms-is an open standard for AI agents to connect and transact with any merchant. It's designed to make integrations fast and flexible to account for every retailer's requirements.
"Shopify has a history of building checkouts for millions of unique retail businesses. We have taken everything we've seen over the decades to make UCP a robust commerce standard that can scale," says Vanessa Lee, VP Shopify. "Agentic commerce has so much potential to redefine shopping and we want to make sure it can scale to every product a customer might want to purchase."
With UCP, agents can represent critical checkout flows for a smooth transaction in any AI platform. That means customers will be able to: submit discount codes, input loyalty credentials, select preferred subscription billing cadences, or confirm selling terms like final sale or pre-order timing in chat. The protocol also works with any payment processor, including Shopify Payments.
Whether building fully conversational purchasing experiences, embedded checkouts in apps, or web-based commerce flows, agentic partners using UCP get the flexibility to support any shopping experience. In fact, it's designed for all types of transactions, not just for retail commerce but also for other verticals in the future.
With UCP, agents can natively complete checkout on a customer's behalf with a flexible architecture that adapts to any commerce stack using REST, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), or Agent2Agent (A2A) protocols. In the instances where a customer's interaction is required-take a furniture retailer that requires a customer to select a specific delivery date and time-UCP gives a standard way for that furniture retailer to specify to agents what information is needed from customers in the checkout flow.
"The shift to agentic commerce will require a shared language across the ecosystem-and the Universal Commerce Protocol provides that framework," says Ashish Gupta, VP/GM of Merchant Shopping at Google. "Through our collaboration with partners like Shopify we're ensuring the protocol is interoperable and ready to meet the evolving demands of retailers and their customers. We're excited to work together and bring this to life soon starting with a new checkout feature in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app."
UCP will power a new integration to enable Shopify merchants to sell directly in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app.
In both Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search, merchants will be able to sell in an embedded experience and manage it directly from the Shopify Admin. Shopify merchants are also eligible for Google's new Direct Offers pilot. Select merchants will soon be able to present exclusive deals directly in AI Mode, with plans to expand further. When shoppers are ready to buy, merchants can meet them with the right offer, at the right time, right inside the conversation.
We're also rolling out an update to our Microsoft integration, enabling Shopify merchants to sell through Copilot Checkout, a new embedded checkout that allows users to shop directly in Copilot.
"Today's shoppers expect to go from search to purchase in a single conversation," said Nayna Sheth, Head of Product for Agentic Payments, Microsoft. "With Copilot Checkout, Shopify merchants can meet customers exactly when intent peaks while remaining at the center of every interaction and in control from start to finish."
Our ecosystem continues to expand daily. As new AI providers and agents emerge and new shopping experiences arrive, Shopify is there. Brands like Monos, Gymshark, and Everlane will soon sell directly in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, and merchants like Keen, Pura Vida, and Kyte Baby are using Copilot Checkout to reach their customers.
"At Monos, we're excited about agentic shopping because it enables us to meet customers where they already are," said Victor Tam, CEO and Co-Founder of Monos. "It's a new way for our story and product details to show up at the exact moment someone is asking real questions with real intent, in a format that feels helpful, not intrusive. For a brand built on thoughtful design, it's a natural next channel for discovery and trust."
Agentic commerce transforms every conversational interface into a place to discover and buy from brands globally. Any surface that can hold a conversation, make a plan, and take actions becomes commerce-capable. Inside search, assistants, productivity tools, feeds, and even emerging surfaces that are still taking shape.
"We're excited to partner with Shopify as innovators in AI-driven commerce, which we believe represents the future of how people shop," says Sam Buckingham, Director of Global Digital Product, KEEN. "As one of the first Shopify brands to use Copilot Checkout, we're proud to help lead the industry in defining this new sales channel."
For the first time, with our new Agentic plan, we're opening Shopify Catalog to brands not using Shopify for their online store. The Agentic plan gives merchants the ability to list their products in Shopify Catalog-our comprehensive collection of billions of products that uses specialized LLMs to categorize, enrich, and standardize product data to surface exactly what customers want in seconds. This will enable non-Shopify merchants to sell products in AI channels, the Shop app, and all future partners of Shopify Catalog.
Merchants set up their data once, and through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, that data is surfaced everywhere, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini.
The Agentic plan connects any brand, regardless of platform, to millions of customers by placing their products exactly where discovery happens. This means more choice for shoppers and broader reach for brands. When commerce flows freely across the entire ecosystem, everyone wins.
With millions of merchants and billions of transactions processed, no platform understands commerce diversity like Shopify. We've spent decades building the infrastructure that lets businesses thrive, taking raw technological power and turning it into tools for millions of merchants. Now we're extending that foundation into the AI era.
