ICYMI: Rep. Bera Participates in Roundtable with Coalition of South Asian Lawmakers to Combat Rising Hate Against South Asian Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. - ICYMI: Yesterday, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) participated in a roundtable with a coalition of South Asian lawmakers, state and local elected officials, Indian American Impact, and Stop AAPI Hate to discuss rising hate and discrimination targeting South Asian American communities and strategies to strengthen prevention, reporting, and response.

"I was proud to join South Asian leaders from across the country for an important conversation about the rise in hate, harassment, and violence affecting our communities," said Representative Bera. "We must work together at every level of government to stamp out hate, strengthen prevention efforts, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure perpetrators are held accountable."

According to a new report from Stop AAPI Hate, 48% of South Asian adults experienced a hate act in 2025 due to their race, ethnicity, or nationality. The report also found that anti-South Asian slurs in online spaces increased by 109% between January 2023 and December 2025, underscoring the growing hostility facing South Asian communities online.

Representative Bera was joined by Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), and Shri Thanedar (MI-13), along with South Asian state and local elected officials from across the country and representatives from Indian American Impact and Stop AAPI Hate.
