Hurricane Rafael passed the Florida Keys, and Monroe County began damage assessments Thursday morning. At this time, no significant impacts have been observed. The National Hurricane Center has canceled the tropical storm warning for the Florida Keys that was in effect. Hurricane Rafael and its outer rain bands are continuing to move away from the Florida Keys and weather conditions are slowly improving.
Government offices (county and municipal) and schools are returning to normal operations today.
The Florida Keys National Weather Service Office has a small craft advisory in effect through Thursday night for all marine waters off the Keys, and officials urge boaters to remain in port until winds and seas subside.
A coastal flood statement is in effect for the oceanside of all the Keys for the potential of minor saltwater flooding in low-lying areas.
Monroe County Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner suggested that residents and visitors should use caution Thursday morning while traveling on Keys roads and remain off the water until the small craft advisory is discontinued.
