Washington, D.C.- Concerned Women for America (CWA), the nation's largest public policy organization for women, celebrates the United Kingdom's (UK) Supreme Court unanimous ruling on April 16, 2025, affirming the legal definition of a "woman" under the 2010 Equality Act refers exclusively to those born biologically female. The landmark decision clarifies that the terms "woman" and "sex" denote biological women and biological sex, as stated by Justice Patrick Hodge.
CWA stands in strong support of this affirmation, which upholds the immutable reality of biological sex and protects the integrity of sex-based rights. The decision, prompted by a challenge from For Women Scotland (FWS), arose after Scottish officials attempted to redefine "women" to include transgender individuals with a Gender Recognition Certificate for public board representation quotas. The court's ruling ensures that such redefinitions do not undermine the ordinary, biological understanding of sex as enshrined in law.
"We commend the UK Supreme Court for its clear-eyed decision to affirm biological truth," said Penny Nance, President and CEO of Concerned Women for America. "This ruling is a victory for women and girls, ensuring that sex-based rights and single-sex spaces are protected. It aligns with the Biblical and common-sense understanding that sex is determined by God at conception and remains unchangeable. It's also a win for basic common sense. We stand with our friends in the UK, including brave advocates like those at For Women Scotland, in celebrating this triumph for truth and justice."
Concerned Women for America, rooted in its mission to promote Biblical values and protect women's rights, sees this decision as a critical step in defending the dignity and safety of women. As Psalm 139:14 declares, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." This ruling reinforces the truth of God's design for humanity, which CWA champions in its ongoing efforts to keep faith and freedom at the forefront.
