Arctic islands that sustained communities for thousands of years are being emptied by climate change, job losses, and isolation. But some refuse to disappear quietly.
Træna's 449 residents live on a tiny archipelago forty kilometres from Norway's mainland. Like many remote Arctic communities, it faces an existential crisis: people are leaving, the climate is changing, and centuries-old ways of life are vanishing.
In this episode of Ocean, we follow the EU-funded project "EmpowerUS," which works with Træna and similar communities to develop solutions tailored to their specific challenges - from transport issues and missing schools to the deeper need for a shared identity rooted in local heritage, culture, and art.
OCEAN is a Euronews magazine in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE). It features monthly 8-minute videos, where we discover fascinating projects and developments related to the ocean and coastal communities.
Broadcast since 2019, OCEAN features episodes on marine protected areas, small-scale fisheries, ocean energy, aquaculture, IUU fishing, sustainable fisheries and much more. Missed one? Check them out on the Euronews website! You will also find some nice extras about these topics.
