What Is The One Risk Every Venture Global Investor Should Know

Venture Global (VG) stock returned 48.0% over the past year, compared with 15.1% for the S&P 500, while revenue over the latest twelve months doubled. Its Plaquemines plant is due to reach commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2026 and its CP2 plant is due to begin production in 2027. Future earnings depend on one thing outside the company's control, a point management raised during its August 11, 2026 earnings call. So what did management warn about?

Venture Global Warned About Swings In LNG Prices

Management cited outsized swings in LNG prices tied to events in the Middle East as the reason for keeping a broader-than-usual guidance range. Because Venture Global sells a portion of its output at market prices rather than under long contracts, its earnings move with those price swings.

So far, management's view of the market has improved. Based on the current outlook, the company raised its 2026 guidance for adjusted EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, to a range of $8.7 billion to $9.1 billion, up from $8.2 billion to $8.5 billion.

That guidance assumes a market liquefaction fee of $12.50 to $13.50 per MMBtu for the cargoes the company has yet to sell in 2026. This fee represents what Venture Global earns for turning gas into LNG, and for every cargo sold below that mark, the company earns less than its guidance assumes.

How Much Would Venture Global Lose If Fees Fell?

For the rest of 2026, not much. As of its August call, Venture Global had contracted over 91% of its 2026 portfolio, up from 84% in May. Management said that every $1 per MMBtu change in fees over the remainder of the year would move its adjusted EBITDA range by $180 million to $210 million.

In 2027, the company is far more exposed. When asked on the call about a $1 change in fees, management placed the effect on 2027 adjusted EBITDA at $650 million to $700 million. Venture Global also has 32 million tonnes a year of capacity still to market, stemming from excess capacity as well as the bolt-on expansions at CP2 and at Plaquemines Phase 1. Management said it will still sign some 20-year contracts, but its emphasis will shift more toward much shorter contracts, for which it expects to earn a higher price.

Despite that 2027 exposure, you are not paying much for today's profit. Venture Global stock traded at 25.3 times earnings on June 30, 2025, and at 7.7 times a year later. At 9.7 times earnings now, compared with 22.9 for the S&P 500, the share price appears to assume that part of today's profit will not last.

How Worried Should Venture Global Investors Be?

The risk is real, but most of it sits in 2027 rather than the rest of 2026, a period when contracts already cover most of the company's output.

The low price for each dollar of profit also does not show how much Venture Global is still spending. Free cash flow, the cash left after building costs, was negative $6.99 billion over the twelve months to June 30, 2026. Total debt stood at $42.5 billion at that date, equaling 122% of the company's market value at its latest close, compared with 19.4% for the S&P 500. If fees fall in 2027, Venture Global would earn less while still owing that debt.

Management raised its 2026 guidance in August based on the current market outlook, while the portion of 2027 output the company will sell at market prices remains open. The fee management assumes for cargoes it has not yet sold, along with how much of 2027 it has contracted, are the figures to watch in Venture Global's next report, scheduled for November 10, 2026.
