LPD Seatbelt Enforcement Initiative Begins May 15 | 2025

Published on May 14, 2025

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a seatbelt enforcement project from May 15 through 30. The initiative is part of the nationwide "Make it Click" campaign with LPD officers focusing on peak times when seatbelt use tends to drop: evenings and weekends.

Officers will take a zero-tolerance approach to unbelted drivers and passengers. During the two-week enforcement period, LPD will increase patrols citywide, especially in areas with higher crash rates and known seatbelt violations. Both drivers and front-seat passengers can be cited under Nebraska seatbelt laws.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • In 2022, more than 50% of people killed in crashes nationwide were not wearing seatbelts.
  • Seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45% and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%.
  • Most unbuckled deaths occur at night, making this campaign's focus on evening hours especially critical.

This campaign is funded through the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office and aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by promoting one of the simplest, most effective safety tools available: the seatbelt.
