Niagara University hosted 37 local high school students and two teachers at its inaugural Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession event on May 6, 2025. Niagara was one of only two institutions of higher education in Western New York to offer the program, which is sponsored by the New York State Society of CPAs to give students the opportunity to learn what it takes to enter the accounting profession.
The COAP group was given a tour and overview of Niagara's Holzschuh College of Business Administration and heard from 14 speakers, including faculty, current undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and professional leaders, who shared their professional and academic experiences with the attendees in the form of presentations and panel discussions.
"The event exceeded our expectations, drawing more than 35 high school students," said Dr. Ian Burt, chair of the accounting department. "Our speakers and panelists truly excelled in offering students a well-rounded and engaging introduction to the accounting profession."
"Niagara University's first COAP program brought together 37 motivated students, each eager to explore financial literacy and career possibilities," said Chris Clarke, a paralegal/ethics coordinator with NYSSCPA. "Throughout the event, I saw them engaged, asking insightful questions, and taking their first steps toward building meaningful professional networks. The enthusiasm in the room made it clear-COAP is providing an invaluable experience that will shape future careers. I'm excited to see how the program continues to grow and inspire even more students next year."
