Daughters of the American Revolution Choose West Jordan for a One-in-Fifty Memorial Honoring Past, Present and Future Fighters for Liberty

Can you say semiquincentennial, bisesquincentennial, or sestercentennial? Try "quarter millennial" instead-or simply go with 250 years! In 2026, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. To honor this milestone, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are placing one Revolutionary War Memorial in each state. West Jordan will proudly host the only one in Utah at Veterans Memorial Park.

"Veterans Memorial Park is a place of reflection and remembrance," Mayor Dirk Burton said. "This plaque will stand alongside other tributes to our nation's heroes, connecting past and present generations of service members."

It joins a collection of memorials to the U.S. Army, Marines, Air Force and more, that line the path to the reflection pool. After a ceremony on April 17, 2025 at 10 AM, the plaque will remain for 100 years - or more. We hope you'll join us!

The inscription reads:

Revolutionary War Patriots

This marker commemorates the men and women who achieved American independence. These Patriots, believing in the noble cause of liberty, fought valiantly to found a new nation.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the largest women's organization in the United States, live by the motto "God, Home, and Country." Focused on community service, historical preservation, and patriotism, Utah's 11 DAR chapters are busy year-round with projects like placing wreaths on veterans' graves, collecting school supplies, and providing veterans with clothing and food. They also organize scholarships, essay contests, and events like the Honor Flight.

Hollie Gilliland, State Regent for the Utah DAR, expressed her appreciation for West Jordan City. "The council was just amazing!" she said. "The mayor and everybody really wanted to have the plaque there. We were also approved for Memory Grove- It was a beautiful spot, but it just didn't feel right. We think more people will visit West Jordan."

West Jordan is honored and grateful to be the home of this historic marker.

"Their dedication helps preserve and share our nation's story," Burton said. "As we approach this milestone, let this plaque remind us of our shared history, the sacrifices made, and our responsibility to uphold the values of those who came before us."
