The new BMW iX3 marks the start of the all-new BMW design language. Major technological advances like with the Neue Klasse always offer an opportunity to introduce more significant design changes. The new design language is clear, reduced, and characterful. It will be replicated across the entire BMW model range in due course - for all drive types. The design language of the Neue Klasse highlights the brand's distinctive design characteristics and accentuates them in a modern interpretation - in the BMW iX3 in its shape and with the hallmark proportions of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
The new design language focuses on the essentials and lends the exterior of the BMW iX3 a modern and robust appearance. The precise lines, reduced surfaces, and large glass surfaces give the all-new BMW iX3 a look and feel that unites dynamics and ease. The interior design makes it an inviting, generous living space. The signature seat position of a BMW X model and BMW's new typical driver focus heavily influenced by advanced digitalisation promotes a superior driving experience both on and off paved roads.
The upright front end endows the BMW iX3 with considerable presence. Moreover, the reduced surface design means that the BMW kidneys and twin headlights - both distinctive design cues - take centre stage visually. An all-new horizontal light signature assumes the role previously performed by chrome in giving the front of the car an aura of quality and sophistication. The sculpted BMW kidneys reference the Neue Klasse of the 1960s in their vertical arrangement. The hallmark BMW headlights that look like a face with four eyes have also been reinterpreted. Vertical, slightly outward-facing daytime running light elements with indicators generate the characteristic focus on the road. Additional horizontal illuminated surfaces with a hallmark depth effect that reaches to the BMW kidneys, complete the all-new light signature.
When viewed from the side, large surfaces broken up by a small number of precise lines create a character-rich appearance. Smooth transitions to the front and rear make it look like the design is cast from a single piece. The glass surfaces in the upper section of the vehicle body exude elegant ease. The streamlined side windows and the slightly sloping roof line optimise the aerodynamic properties. Hidden seals facilitate the direct transition between the vehicle body and glass surfaces and ensure a harmonious side view. The door handles are flush and extend automatically when the car is approached. Particularly eye-catching are the athletic shoulders and the heavily tapered glasshouse. The width of the car is highlighted by the generous, horizontal taillights with an all-new light signature, particularly intensive depth effect, and the signature BMW L shape.
The tidied up, reduced interior design sets standards in terms of modernity and digital experience. Clear BMW driver focus and comfort for all those on board are front and centre. The lines of the seemingly floating instrument panel flow directly into the large door trim panels, creating an enveloping wrap-around effect for the passengers. Another prominent influence in the interior is the new control/operation system BMW Panoramic iDrive. Precisely curated interior worlds endow each equipment package with a unique, unmistakeable character. The materials and colours are inspired by modern interior design and the progressive Neue Klasse technology.
As Head of BMW Group Design, Adrian van Hooydonk is one of the minds behind the new BMW design language. "The design of the Neue Klasse is a very modern interpretation of what BMW has always stood for," he said. "Our new design language gives the all-new BMW iX3 an aura that is visionary, modern, and timeless, and above all, more BMW than ever."
