Virginia Department of Education announced today that Hunter Trivette, an educator at Oak Point Elementary School, has been named the 2027 Region 7 Teacher of the Year, recognizing his dedication to student engagement and innovative instruction.
Trivette is known for inspiring students through creative lessons that make learning meaningful and engaging. His classroom emphasizes collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking, helping students develop the skills they need for future academic success.
"Mr. Trivette continually impresses me with his passion for his profession," said Oak Point Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Jennifer Sayers. "His physical education program is a diverse experience designed to instill a love of physical activity and healthy living in every child. It is about sharing, teamwork, and creating an understanding of the needs of others both physically and socially."
Trivette has created opportunities to support children beyond the school walls as the founder of the youth league wrestling program, volunteer for the Smyth County Department of Social Services Youth Camps serving students with disabilities, and volunteering for public service events with the Marion Police Department.
"Mr. Trivette exemplifies the very best of what education should be: student-centered, inclusive, and rooted in genuine care for every child," said Smyth County Public School Superintendent, Dr. Bradley Haga. "His ability to connect with students across all levels is remarkable and his dedication to meeting the needs of adaptive special education students is especially noteworthy. Beyond instructional excellence, Mr. Trivette creates an environment built on encouragement, respect, and positive relationships."
He is a passionate educator who builds strong relationships with students and encourages them to believe in their abilities. Trivette's commitment to innovation and student-centered learning has made a lasting impact on students and fellow educators in Smyth County Public Schools.
"Mr. Trivette represents the level of dedication and passion found in and out of the classrooms that foster a deep and impactful connections with the students and the community," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway. "Educators like Mr. Trivette help students discover the joy of learning. His commitment to student success demonstrates the powerful influence teachers have in shaping the lives of Virginia's learners and families."
Trivette will represent Region 7, the Blue Ridge Highlands region, in the statewide Virginia Teacher of the Year selection process.
