Brae High School Unveils New Logo

Brae High School has unveiled its new school logo, created through a collaborative design process led by pupils and shaped by the views of pupils, parents and staff.

This project was part of a pupil leadership initiative supported by 'Developing the Young Workforce' (DYW), offering learners a real-world creative experience.

The design journey began with Pupil Take Over Days, where pupils selected school improvement ideas and projects. Some learners chose to focus on promoting the new school vision "Brae High School: Discover Your True North" by developing a new school logo. Themes were explored with guidance from Keirynn Topp, graphic designer at Shetland-based company Maskot. Following this, pupils and parents were consulted on their preferred themes.

As the process developed, seven pupils had the opportunity to visit Maskot's studio and work directly with Keirynn to shape and finalise the design - an invaluable experience linking learning to the world of work.

The final logo captures key elements that reflect Brae High School's vision, identity, values and aspirations. A sailing boat represents the north mainland's strong maritime heritage and the concept of children and young people being on a journey of discovery and learning. The sea was highlighted by pupils as central to life in Shetland and our unique island context. Birds feature as a respectful nod to the school's former logo, maintaining continuity and pride in our school. And finally, a compass has been added to reflect Brae High School's new vision: "Discover Your True North" representing the beliefs, purpose and values that will provide learners with an authentic sense of themselves to direct their path through life.
This refreshed identity reflects the school - rooted in community, proud of its heritage, and committed to high aspirations for every learner so that they find their true north.

Brae High School's head teacher Logan Nicolson says: "Special thanks must go to Keirynn Topp at Maskot for all his time and support on this project. We are also grateful to the many pupils, parents and carers, staff, stakeholders, and partners who contributed their thoughts and ideas throughout this process. Their input has ensured that the final design truly represents the values, pride and spirit of Brae High School and its community."
