Sutton Wilderness Park Habitat Restoration Project occurring October 15 and 16, 2026

October 12, 2026

The City of Norman Park Development Division will continue work this week on a Habitat Restoration project in the George M. Sutton Urban Wilderness Area, also known as Sutton Wilderness Park, at 1920 12th Avenue NE.

During this project, on October 15 and October 16, contractors will be using forestry-mulchers and a brush-hog to remove invasive varieties of trees and shrubs - including Eastern Redcedar and Chinese Privet - but will leave other trees and plants intact. The work will generally be taking place in a 4-acre area on the southern shore of the lake.

"By removing these invasive species, Parks and Recreation will be converting this area closer to what it would have looked like before human interference - more of an open-woodlands ecotype, which will better support native plants and animals," said City of Norman Forester Colin Zink.

The mulching tools can fling woody debris when they are running, City officials said, so part of the walking trail in the park will be closed for safety from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 15 and October 16.

Questions can be directed to (405) 366-5472.
