SPRINGVALE, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at a Memorial Day event held at Southern Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery (SMVMC) in Springvale. Members of the SMVMC Association, Major General Diane Dunn of the Maine National Guard, retired Captain James Manter of the U.S. Navy, and local veterans and residents were also in attendance at the event to honor those in uniform who lost their lives in service to our country.
"From Lexington and Concord to Little Round Top, Flanders Fields, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima, from Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan to our time, the men and women of our armed forces have added new and everlasting strands of valor, devotion to duty, and sacrifice to the story of our nation," said Senator Collins during her remarks. "As we look down the rows of headstones, the flowers, and the flags, we see our history. It is a history written not by powerful conquerors, but by ordinary men and women who set aside the comforts of home to answer the call to defend liberty. By keeping the trust of Memorial Day, we tell the families of the fallen that they do not bear this burden alone. May God bless our service men and women, and may God bless America."
