State Education Department Appoints Academic Monitor for the Wyandanch Union Free School District Ahead of the 2026-27 School Year

New York State Education Department Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today that she has appointed Dr. Lorna R. Lewis to serve as Academic Monitor for the Wyandanch Union Free School District. Dr. Lewis will work with Albert Chase, who has been the Fiscal Monitor for the district since April 2020.

Dr. Lewis brings nearly five decades of experience in education to her role as Academic Monitor. She began her career as a science teacher before transitioning into school administration, ultimately serving as Superintendent of the Malverne Union Free School District until her retirement in June 2025.

Prior to her tenure in the Malverne UFSD, Dr. Lewis served as Superintendent of the East Williston Union Free School District and the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, as well as Deputy Superintendent of the Three Village Central School District.

Throughout her career, Dr. Lewis has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional leadership and mentorship. She served as president of the Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and as president of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, becoming the first woman of color to hold the position. She has also served as a coach with the Women of Color Education Collaborative, supporting and mentoring emerging leaders in education.
