Free radon test kits available during January
Jan. 15, 2026
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service and a state agency are providing information about radon and free short-term radon test kits.
Radon is a colorless, odorless cancer-causing gas that is commonly found in Alaska. January is National Radon Action Month, and, according to Extension energy specialist Art Nash, it is a good time to test for the radioactive gas.
Radon can enter a building through cracks and holes in the foundation. When doors and windows are sealed tightly, radon levels inside a home can rise.
Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Free short-term radon test kits can be ordered from the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys at https://bit.ly/Radon2026. For more information, contact the Alaska Radon Hotline at 800-478-8324.
