Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Ericsson have achieved technical alignment on fundamental 6G radio innovations, successfully validating these pioneering advancements through collaborative lab prototypes. This milestone represents significant progress toward establishing future 6G specifications and accelerating commercialization. The partnership will be highlighted at MWC 2026, taking place from March 2-5, where live demonstrations will showcase key radio advancements and performances in new spectrum.
Moving from concept to prototype, the two partners have jointly developed and validated key physical layer capabilities in a prototype environment - an essential first step toward shaping the next-generation standard. They are presenting agreed-upon study items for 3GPP 6G Release 20, including a 400 MHz component carrier with 30 kHz subcarrier spacing. This joint demonstration provides an early look at new spectrum, specifically exploring performance characteristics and device capabilities in the centimeter-wave (cmWave) range around 6-8 GHz, which will help influence future 6G design.
Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies are also jointly prototyping emerging AI and AR experiences with new device form-factors and resilient infrastructure, advancing a broader collaboration on AI-native, context aware 6G networks with device-network collaborative compute, optimized uplink coverage, and premium wide-area experiences at scale. These capabilities are being trialed with leading operators to advance the ecosystem, with a representative joint prototype to be showcased live at MWC 2026.
Why it matters
As usage moves from app-based, user-initiated sessions to persistent, agentic AI experiences across multiple devices, uplink demand will rise significantly, making wide-area coverage for AI services increasingly essential and sought-after.
This shift highlights the urgent need for an end-to-end ecosystem capable of delivering enhanced uplink performance and superior user experiences with new device form factors and across broader coverage areas than what is currently required. 6G is poised to address these evolving demands, ensuring consistent performance at scale.
Consumer trends indicate that everyday use of agentic AI is set to rise dramatically by 2030, spanning multiple devices and extending into outdoor environments. Ericsson's latest ConsumerLab report highlights that by 2030, 40 percent of consumers are expected to use agentic AI services daily. Additionally, one in four users will likely access AI across several devices, while 45 percent anticipate utilizing AI outdoors. As AI-driven use cases expand, uplink data demand is projected to triple every five years, underscoring the critical need for robust uplink performance and consistent coverage.
Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies continue to work towards delivering AI-native, context-aware 6G networks, enabling multi-device user paradigms, device-network collaborative compute and optimized uplink coverage for wide area premium experiences at scale. The ongoing collaboration, including trials with leading operators, is translating the 6G vision into concrete advancements and driving the ecosystem forward.
Durga Malladi, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Technology Planning, Edge Solutions, and Data Center, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. says: "Our collaboration with Ericsson is about making 6G real with significant performance benefits. By aligning early on key radio concepts and user-experience validation across devices and networks, we create a clearer path from lab to standard to commercial launch. That focus on usable performance, especially uplink and wide area reliability, will unlock the next wave of AI driven devices and services."
Erik Ekudden, Chief Technology Officer, Ericsson, says: "Building an intelligent AI/6G fabric requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem - from devices and networks to the edge, cloud, and AI platforms. Partnering with Qualcomm, we are transforming 6G from a concept into reality by validating its foundational capabilities through real-world prototypes. These include exploring new spectrum, enhancing uplink performance, and advancing AI-native device-to-network collaboration. Our efforts are helping to shape the industry and pave a clear path from laboratory innovation to large-scale, real-world deployment."
