Burbank PD News Release: Burbank Police Department Receives Grant to Improve Road Safety

The Burbank Police Department has been awarded a $213,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support traffic enforcement and community education efforts to prevent crashes, reduce serious injuries and fatalities, and make Burbank's roadways safer for everyone.

The grant-funded program will run through September 2027 and support targeted enforcement, officer training, and public education initiatives to improve roadway safety.

Grant-funded activities will include:

  • DUI checkpoints and patrols targeting impaired drivers
  • High-visibility enforcement of California's hands-free cell phone law to address distracted driving
  • Targeted enforcement of violations that place bicyclists and pedestrians at risk
  • Enforcement of primary crash-causing violations, including speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and red-light violations, and unsafe lane changes and turns
  • Community education and presentations addressing distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • Collaborative traffic enforcement operations with neighboring law enforcement agencies
  • Specialized officer training and recertification in impaired driving detection, including Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs
  • Motorcycle safety enforcement and public awareness campaigns, including "Know Your Limit"

The Burbank Police Department remains committed to working alongside the community to promote responsible driving, increase roadway safety, and prevent avoidable tragedies.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds this program through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
