TechTown, Wayne State University's entrepreneurship hub, has introduced a refreshed brand identity that reflects its 20-year legacy of supporting innovation, small business and economic development in Detroit and across Southeast Michigan.
Working with Detroit-based Zoyes Creative and University Communications and Marketing, TechTown developed an updated visual and verbal identity that reintroduces the organization and reinvigorates its mission: to provide inclusive, accessible support for both tech founders and small-business owners throughout the region. Its new-look website is also live.
"Every couple of years, our programs evolve and adapt because the needs of entrepreneurs change and the city changes," said Ned Staebler, vice president for economic development at Wayne State and president and CEO of TechTown. "Our new brand identity reflects our evolution - what's next and how we're moving forward."
More than just a new look, the rebrand reinforces what sets TechTown apart. Its close connection to Wayne State strengthens credibility and provides access to university resources, while preserving TechTown's independence as a nonprofit that serves the broader entrepreneurial community.
"There are many advantages entrepreneurs can leverage through our relationship with Wayne State," Staebler said. "Individuals and companies are able to get connected to the university's vast number of resources to help them build and grow their businesses through TechTown - and that's another reason we're rebranding."
A key part of the rebrand is TechTown's new wordmark, which visually balances its affiliation with Wayne State and its independent role as a nonprofit organization. As the anchor of Detroit's first innovation district and a key part of the university's economic development work, TechTown's updated brand serves as both a reminder and statement of its transformative and catalytic work for more than 20 years.
The font has a digital feel, representing TechTown's technology work, while the cutouts in the letters symbolize Detroit's streets, corridors and neighborhoods - a nod to the small-business communities TechTown supports.
The design captures TechTown's dual mission: advancing technology-based innovation while remaining deeply rooted in Detroit's neighborhoods and local economy.
With its refreshed identity, TechTown emphasizes that it is more than a "tech hub" and physical space. The organization offers a 360-degree approach to entrepreneurship, providing programs and resources for anyone with an idea and the drive to make an impact. Whether in person or online, TechTown's goal is to help turn ideas into real economic and social benefits.
As the organization enters its next phase, the rebrand strengthens the bridge between Wayne State's resources and Detroit's entrepreneurial ecosystem - and helps tell TechTown's story of innovation grounded in community, independence anchored in partnership and the power of possibility.
