D.C. Man Sentenced to 65.5 Years in Prison for Sexually Assaulting Two Victims in 2024

WASHINGTON - Maurice Spears, 34, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to a total of 65 years and 180 days in prison for the sexual abuse of two different women in April and July 2024, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

"Two victims. Eight days of violence, threats, and relentless sexual abuse. Today, the court delivered justice," said U.S. Attorney Pirro. "Maurice Spears will spend more than 65 years in prison - a consequence that reflects the fear he inflicted and the lives he tried to destroy. This sentence ensures he will never again have the chance to prey on another person in our community."

Spears was found guilty by a Superior Court jury of six counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of felony threats, and one count of misdemeanor sexual abuse on May 14, 2026. Superior Court Judge Jason Park ordered the prison term to be followed by a lifetime supervised release. The defendant must also register as a sex offender.

According to the governments evidence, on April 15, 2024, Spears went on a single date with the first victim. After the date, they ended up back in the defendant's storage unit, where he was living. While inside the storage unit, Spears threatened to kill the victim and her children if she left and told her that he planned to force her into prostitution. He also showed her a fake police badge and told her that he had law enforcement in his pocket. The defendant forced the victim to spend the next three days with him and sexually assaulted the victim twice inside his storage unit. He later took her to Virginia and kept her in a motel room. She was eventually rescued by her family and taken to the hospital.

On July 26, 2024, the second victim met Spears when they were both at a services provider for homeless individuals. The defendant promised to help the victim get some shoes. The victim ran into Spears the next day and he started to follow her around and refused to leave her tent when she asked him to. Eventually Spears started threatening her, telling her that he was connected to law enforcement and that he had people who would harm her if he told them to. The defendant spent the next five days repeatedly sexually assaulting her and refused to let her out of his sight. The victim was eventually able to call 911 and escape from the defendant.

Spears was arrested on September 9, 2024, and has been in custody since.

Joining the announcement was Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Interim Chief Carroll commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. They also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Roessler and Amanda Swanson, who prosecuted the case.
