Welcomed by HCMA Vice President Assoc. Prof. Dr Duong Trung Y, President Watanabe reaffirmed ERIA's commitment to supporting Viet Nam's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Kentaro Noma, Programme Manager for Energy at ERIA, introduced the study and presented the framework and key outcomes of the carbon neutrality scenario analysis.
Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director Emeritus of the International Energy Agency (IEA), shared insights on the potential role of nuclear energy in Viet Nam's energy transition. He emphasised the importance of strong national leadership, coherent long-term policy direction, and robust regional cooperation in enabling nuclear adoption.
Following the meeting, ERIA and HCMA co-organised a workshop at the Academy of Public Administration and Governance (APAG) to discuss the results of another ERIA study: 'Viet Nam's Development Model and Policies for Achieving Two-Digit Growth: Lessons from China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.' The event was co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr Hoang Van Nghia, Director General of International Cooperation at HCMA, and Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Ba Chien, President of APAG.
During the workshop, Professor Justin Yifu Lin (Peking University), Professor Lee Keun (Seoul National University), and Professor Tran Van Tho (Waseda University) presented case studies on periods of rapid economic growth in China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. Drawing from these experiences, the study provides strategic policy recommendations for Viet Nam's economic reform, particularly in innovation and R&D, to avoid the middle-income trap and attain high-income status by 2045.
