Abused and Neglected Dog Rescued by Animal Services

Reading Time: < 1 minute

County of San Diego Animal Services and the District Attorney's Office announced the prosecution of a man for felony animal abuse and neglect after he failed to seek care for his injured dog.

While responding to another call to service, Lt. Natalie Harrington found an injured dog in Campo. When she arrived, she found Eagle, a young female Belgian Malinois, with a severely injured leg.

Lt. Harrington acquired a warrant to impound the dog. Eagle was then taken to Animal Services for treatment with a veterinarian. Due to the nature of the injury and to protect Eagle's health, the leg was amputated. Eagle was treated by a specialist using advanced tools, including laser technology, to perform the surgery and speed recovery.

Eagle was back on her feet in three days, healing quickly, and is waiting to be adopted by a new family. Eagle's $2,900 treatment was covered by the Spirit Fund, a Veterinary Medical fund to treat animals in need of help or expensive veterinary care. You can learn more about the Spirit Fund on the Animal Services website .

"County Animal Services protects the health, safety and welfare of people and animals in unincorporated San Diego County," said Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice. "Thanks to help from the community and the dedication of our Animal Services officers and staff, animals like Eagle get the care they need and the opportunity for a new start with a loving family."

Animal Services envisions a safe, thriving community where all people and animals in San Diego County have access to essential animal care and support services.

The department also provides 24-hour public safety response to help injured animals, investigate reports of animal abuse, and protect the public from aggressive animals.
