DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration’s Politically Motivated Lawsuit Against New Haven, Connecticut

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement in response to a politically motivated lawsuit the Trump administration filed against New Haven and leaders in Connecticut, including Governor Ned Lamont, Attorney General William Tong, and New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker:

"This lawsuit is a politically motivated attack on New Haven and the people of Connecticut.

"New Haven is not a 'sanctuary jurisdiction'. The description has no legal meaning. Our state and local laws reflect a longstanding constitutional principle that the federal government cannot commandeer local officials to carry out its inhumane enforcement agenda.

"Mayor Elicker, Governor Lamont, and Attorney General Tong have it exactly right, and I stand with them. The Trump DOJ should be focused on real public safety threats and prosecuting criminals. I regret that they have decided to waste resources bullying cities that have chosen to protect the trust between law enforcement and the communities they protect."
