Six juvenile green sea turtles returned to the Atlantic Ocean earlier this afternoon after receiving specialized care and rehabilitation at Volusia County's Marine Science Center. The public release at the Beach Street Ramp in Ponce Inlet marked the successful conclusion of the turtles' recovery and their return to their natural habitat.
The turtles, named Frogish, Mangrove Snapper, Highland Cow, Nurse Shark, Armadillo, and Silkie Chicken, received treatment from the center's dedicated rehabilitation team before being cleared for release. Their journey back to the ocean reflects the culmination of efforts to help injured and distressed sea turtles recover and regain the strength they need to survive in the wild. Before the sea turtle release, staff also returned a rehabilitated juvenile brown pelican to the wild.
The Marine Science Center serves as a facility for sick and injured sea turtles and other wildlife, providing specialized care with the goal of returning animals to their natural environments. Since Jan. 1, the center has received 243 sea turtles, 250 hatchlings and washbacks, and 215 other reptiles, including gopher tortoises, box turtles, and freshwater turtles.
Beyond rehabilitation, the Marine Science Center offers educational opportunities that connect residents and visitors with Florida's diverse marine life and coastal habitats. Through interactive exhibits, hands-on programs, and wildlife encounters, the center encourages a greater understanding of marine conservation and the importance of protecting natural resources.
