On December 5, Ambassador Tigran Balayan attended a commemoration in the Belgian Parliament honoring the victims of genocides recognized by Belgium, at the kind invitation of Peter De Roover, President of the Chamber of Representatives.
Speeches were delivered by Peter De Roover and Michel De Maegd, the Chamber member and lead author of the 2020 resolution. Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, relatives of survivors, and representatives of civil society.
Distinguished academics- Bernard Coulie (UCL), Dirk Roodzant, Neira Sabanovic (ULB)- along with journalist Stefan Blommaert (VRT)- delivered remarks highlighting the importance of commemoration, preserving historical truth, and the role of international cooperation in preventing future atrocities. They also emphasized the significance of memory, education, public awareness, and mechanisms for preventing mass violence.
The event reaffirmed Belgium's commitment to honoring genocide victims, combating impunity, and supporting international efforts to prevent future atrocities.
